Primary Space
Dalry School, North Ayrshire,
Scotland

Primary Space is an unique project involving the close collaboration of artists, architects and North Ayrshire Council in the design and realisation of a new concept in primary school building. This £9m new building in Dalry, North Ayrshire, has evolved to provide a range of learning environments that have creativity at their heart.

Building work started on site on 4 July 2005 and was completed in March 2007. Most of the integral artworks were installed Jan - March 2007. The school has been in use since April 2007.

I was invited by Bruce McLean - the core member of Primary Space - to create 7 works for the project. The works have been inserted to a special wall in Dalry Primary School.

The prospected spectators was really an important factor when I made decisions over these works. Seven years is a long time and in many ways, the 1st year students are very different from the 7th year ones. Therefore, each work responses to a specific year to form a progress and I included as many textures, scales and expressions as possible, while appropriate.

Due to the nature of the display in the school, these works could be viewed only from one side, which results in the stage-like effect of the works. The pre-set scale has brought in some limitation and also some tricky perspective.
